Food for Thought Quotes
I love great quotes. Not the kind on a “motivational poster” on the wall in the waiting room at the Dr.s office. But the kind you find anywhere from the back of a wine label, to an entire opening paragraph from a great book.
“But in order to achieve the marvelous…it is precisely the unthinkable that must be thought.”
That’s been a favorite for years. And its fitting when I think of guys like Fred Brander and Richard Sanford wearing cut-off jeans back in the early 1970s thinking, “Hey…I think we can create fantastic wines here.” I think of a friend of mine starting to brew beer up in the Bay Area…just a regular guy…and I’m sure his wife and family thought it was just a hobby. But now we’re all lucky enough to drink his Telegraph Beer.
My old football coach used to yell, “Do you wanna be the HAMMER!…or the nail?!” Another wise man once said, “If all you’ve trained to use is a hammer…the whole world looks like a nail.”
One particularly hard day of my past, while driving in LA traffic, as I worried about the daunting challenges of life at that particular time that kept mounting… A bumper sticker in front of me said, “Where are we going? And what are we doing in this hand basket?” I literally had such a cathartic laugh I cried.
So at the end of every episode…we’re gonna drop a quote as a nice yummy “Food for Thought” No big heavy philosophy. No big heavy thunderous Cab. Perhaps a nice refreshing Sauv Blanc on a hot day sort of thing. Ah…but there lies the time bomb… just like those great song lyrics you re-discover when you are much older and well marinated than when you first grooved to the melody back in High School.
Got any great quotes? Feel free to share (keep your dirty limericks clean people – blue is fine but come on don’t go purple on us).
Food for thought today…
I’d like to borrow one from our friends at Les Marchands here in Santa Barbara – well actually it is from Hemingway, but they used to have it up on their website and I’d definitely recommend you drop by the shop and say hi to Bryan and Sam. They will turn you on to some delicious finds.
“Wine is one of the most civilized things in the world and one of the most natural things of the world that has been brought to the greatest perfection, and it offers a greater range for enjoyment and appreciation than, possibly, any other purely sensory thing.”
TASTING TALK folks…its a pretty marvelous thought.
